I have about a dozen major interests, things that I want to spend time on. Though being an interested person is key to being a successful and happy one, at times it can be hard to focus your attention.
At SecretPenguin every month each team member picks one or two things to focus on for that month. These focuses can be small things like being more organized or large things like a new product or service. At the end of the month, we all get together and present and discuss our focuses.
In November, I focused on Git and came up with a Git strategy for SecretPenguin. In December, I conceptualized and built a new client section for SecretPenguin (which, I am happy to say, we are going to launch real real soon). This month, my focus is on analysis; something I have been borderline obsessed with over the last six months or so, having countless long conversations with Dave about SEO, analytics, and content creation.
Focusing your attention allows you to give your interests the time they deserve. It allows you to more fully develop your thoughts and skill in a specific subject rather than constantly bouncing around and thinking about a million different things.
I feel very grateful that I am such an interested and curious person. By focusing my attention I hope to fully develop my skills and thoughts into truly valuable ones. Here is to an interested, interesting, and focused life.
What are you going to focus on this month?
